Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is expected to arrive in the UAE around October 6 to join his squad for the one-off Test match against Afghanistan at the Sheikh Zayed International Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Najmul Hossain fell ill during Bangladesh’s Asian Games assignment in Japan, making it difficult for him to go to the UAE with his teammates. Following testing, BCB medical specialists confirmed an infection; however, COVID-19 and influenza were excluded. He was unable to depart with the rest of the travelling party and remained in his hotel room at the time.
Shanto developed a low-grade fever shortly after arriving in Japan, which kept him confined to his hotel room for an extended period of time. The cramped environment made recovery more difficult.
As they prepare for a rigorous white-ball schedule following the one-off Test, Bangladesh will be hoping that Najmul Hossain recovers to full fitness.
The one-time Test match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh will take place from October 9 to 13 at the Sheikh Zayed International Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Following the Test, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe will play a tri-series of one-day internationals from October 17 to 23.

If Najmul Hossain fully recovers from the illness that stopped him from competing at the Asian Games, he is expected to play an important role in the tri-series. The first two games of the tri-series will take held in Abu Dhabi, while the following games will be played in Sharjah. His batting and leadership abilities will be critical to the team’s aspirations to produce strong performances in the next games in the United Arab Emirates.
