The Cricket Regulator today accused England fast bowler Brydon Carse with defaming the sport following an altercation at a Derby nightclub in August. In a statement released on Friday, the regulator acknowledged that Carse had violated Rule 3.2 of the ECB’s professional behaviour guidelines.
Following Durham’s County Championship victory against Derbyshire the day before, Brydon Carse, 31, was arrested and later released at roughly 4 a.m. on August 23 on suspicion of being inebriated and disorderly. Carse was seen being led out of the event in handcuffs in a video that went viral. The film includes Durham coworkers Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts.
Derbyshire Police then admitted that they had been investigating an assault accusation connected to the same occasion, but the investigation was closed last month without any further action. The Cricket Regulator’s charge is governed by the ECB’s professional conduct framework, and it operates independently of any police investigation.
Regulation 3.2 provides that “no participant may conduct themselves in a manner, do any act or make any omission at any time which is improper or which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the ECB, the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute” .
What punishment might the disciplinary tribunal inflict on Brydon Carse?
Brydon Carse is set to appear before the Cricket Discipline Panel in the following weeks, where his sentence will be determined. The panel has a range of choices, from a lengthy playing ban to a formal reprimand on the lower end.
Brydon Carse’s attitude off the pitch has already sparked criticism. During England’s third Ashes defeat, he was seen in Adelaide after his captain at the time, Stokes, had instructed his players to stay at the team hotel. Carse’s two-year ECB contract is approaching the end of its first year.
In response to the incident last month, England’s white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum advised Brydon Carse to “get his house in order” before being called up to the national team.
What effect has the event had on Brydon Carse’s prospects in England?
Brydon Carse’s absence from England’s second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s was due to the Derby incident. Despite his big contribution to Durham’s victory in the second division County Championship, he has not been selected for any subsequent squads.
Brydon Carse “needed some time away” from international cricket, according to England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook, who mentioned Carse’s absence during the most recent series against Sri Lanka. “He’s working on a few things behind the scenes, and hopefully he’ll be ready at some point in the future,” Brook said, offering a balanced appraisal of Carse’s situation as the discipline panel process begins.

The outcome of the next discipline panel hearing, as well as Carse’s behaviour in the meantime, will have a considerable bearing on whether he returns to international cricket.
