After a three-year break, seasoned fast bowler Ali Khan has returned to the USA’s 50-over squad ahead of their final scheduled ODI match before the World Cup Qualifiers in Africa in February. Ali Khan last participated in the format for the United States during the most recent World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

Alongside Ali Khan, former vice captain and fellow fast bowler Jasdeep Singh has also been called up after recovering from an injury layoff. Singh had decided not to play in the USA’s previous overseas assignment before the Major League Cricket season in June. The two seasoned pacers take the place of teenage fast bowlers Ritvik Appidi and Rushil Ugarkar.

On Monday, the United States and the United Arab Emirates will begin their four-match tri-series. The top spot in the World Cup League 2 standings will be assured if they win two of their last four games during the next ten days. They would have won 23 of 36 games over the course of three years if that had been the case.

Why is Ugarkar’s omission significant?

Rushil Ugarkar may regret missing out given his recent achievements in the format. The 23-year-old took 12 wickets in six games at an economy rate of less than six, including a five-wicket haul in Dubai where he destroyed the UAE top order and contributed to the hosts’ cheap defeat.

He was left out because Ali Khan and Singh were selected by the selectors before the qualifiers since they had more experience.

Ali Khan, a Pakistani international, Ehsan Adil, maintains his position, providing the United States with a fast assault and a plethora of international experience. The group’s leader is Saurabh Netravalkar.

How does the batting unit look before to the qualifiers?

The batting lineup is expected to be led by Monank Patel, followed by vice captain Sai Teja Mukkamalla, Shehan Jayasuriya, and Milind Kumar. Mukkamalla and Kumar have been extremely consistent in the current World Cup League 2 cycle, scoring over 1,100 runs at averages of 52 and 63, respectively.

Monank has not been at his best in recent ODI series, owing in part to injury, but he has still scored over 900 runs at an average of 35. He has an opportunity to get back on track before the upcoming games’ qualification rounds. Furthermore, despite Shayan Jahangir’s outstanding T20 franchise success, Smit Patel, who has nearly 900 runs in the league at an average of 36, is expected to take the wicketkeeper-opener position at the top of the order..

Sanjay Krishnamurthi, a hard-hitting finisher, keeps his position and has the highest strike rate (102) of any USA batter competing. Shubham Ranjane and Harmeet Singh, both all-rounders, continue to provide disciplinary balance. Looking ahead, Andries Gous and Amshi de Silva, who attracted a $100,000 bid from Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at the ILT20 auction after an outstanding MLC season, are potential additions to the qualifiers in February.

The complete USA team for the ODI tri-series

Smit Patel, Monank Patel (C), Shehan Jayasuriya, Sai Teja Mukkamalla (VC), Milind Kumar, Shubham Ranjane, Sanjay Krishnamurthi, Harmeet Singh, Ehsan Adil, Nosthush Kenjige, Saurabh Netravalkar, Shayan Jahangir, Yasir Mohammad, Ali Khan, Jasdeep Singh,
