Ishan Kishan is in contention for a spot in India’s Test squad for the two-match series in New Zealand in late November, with the national selection committee set to meet soon to finalise the touring party. His selection is far from inevitable, but selectors are anticipated to take his recent red-ball performance into serious consideration.
Ishan Kishan Duleep Trophy campaign has dominated the conversation. Captaining East Zone in the final versus South Zone, he hit 270 and 80 to lead his team to victory. In three tournament matches, he scored 409 runs at an average of over 100 and was named Player of the Match in the final. In white-ball cricket, he has been similarly prolific, leading India’s T20I run charts in 2026 with 1,005.
The wicketkeeping area is where the debate gets complicated. Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel have both participated in India’s past five Tests and performed admirably, so selecting a third gloveman would be a difficult task.
Why is Ishan Kishan’s Test Case taken seriously?
Ishan Kishan has only two Test caps to his name, with his most recent appearance occurring more almost three years ago. Despite this disparity, team management believes his current performance deserves a red-ball recall. His Duleep Trophy stats have revived trust in his skill at that level, and several stakeholders believe that such performances cannot be overlooked.
The way he is normally utilised in white-ball cricket may be advantageous to him. Ishan Kishan typically bats as a specialist top-order hitter rather than a wicketkeeper-batter in limited-overs teams, thus selectors may consider him in a similar role for the Test format, alleviating concerns about carrying three glovemen.
Who else is in the running for the New Zealand Tests?
The fast bowling group provides the selectors with a wide range of choices. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Gurnoor Brar are all considered certainties, and Prasidh Krishna’s availability is thought to be increasing. Akash Deep is thought to be particularly well-suited to New Zealand conditions, and Mukesh Kumar has bolstered his cause with consistent performances across forms.

Mukesh, a Bengal seamer, grabbed 12 wickets in three Duleep Trophy games for East Zone and was instrumental in steering Rest of India to victory in the recently concluded Irani Cup. Harshit Rana has resumed bowling at the Center of Excellence, although his exact fitness level has not been determined. The majority of the players that represented India on the England tour under Shubman Gill are anticipated to compete again, injury allowing.
