Coach Phil Simmons discussed the setback and the team’s preparations for the Afghanistan game. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the former Bangladesh captain, missed the game against Zimbabwe owing to an illness.

On Monday, October 19, Mehidy left his hotel room for the first time since the Test series against Afghanistan to attend a practice session in Abu Dhabi.

Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in an ODI at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on October 21, 2026, as part of the 2026 Afghanistan Tri-Nation Series, which runs from October 17 to 23 in the United Arab Emirates. Zimbabwe is also represented in the competition. Bangladesh’s opening encounter against Zimbabwe concluded in a 99-run defeat, prompting Bangladesh Cricket Board president Tamim Iqbal to attend an extended meeting with players and coaching staff in the dressing room.

Simmons, on the other hand, saw the president’s message differently.

Litton Das, who took over as captain from Mehidy, was ruled out of the entire tri-nation series after failing a fitness test prior to the Zimbabwe match. This meant that Bangladesh faced Zimbabwe without both Mehidy and their new captain, posing additional obstacles for the team.

Addressing Zimbabwe’s defeat.

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s batting meltdown against Zimbabwe, Simmons stated that the team failed to correctly appraise the situation after a good start. Hours after the setback, Bangladesh Cricket Board president Tamim Iqbal conducted a lengthy meeting with the players and team management in the dressing room that lasted late into the nite.
