Shreyas Iyer will captain India in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which begins on October 22, 2026, at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Former India Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has commented on how important a series win in New Zealand would be for Iyer’s growth as a leader.
Cheteshwar Pujara made it obvious that performing well in international competition carries a particular weight for any Indian captain or player.
Shreyas Iyer currently captains India’s T20I team and serves as vice-captain in ODIs. He was also selected captain for the fourth and fifth ODIs of the New Zealand series, as announced on October 19, 2026.
What is Shreyas Iyer captaincy record like ahead into the New Zealand series?
Prior to the New Zealand T20I series, Iyer had captained India in 21 T20I matches, winning 11 and losing 8, with two no-results, for a win rate of 52.38 percent. His tenure began with losses against Ireland and England, but he later led India to 3-0 victories over Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, as well as a gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games.
Prior to this tour, India’s most recent T20I assignment was a 2-2 tie at home against the West Indies. On October 6, 2026, the same day the New Zealand tour roster was named, Shreyas Iyer achieved his first T20I century, an unbeaten 101 against the West Indies, highlighting his form ahead of the series.
As a result, the New Zealand tour, which follows the England tour, is one of Shreyas Iyer most challenging overseas assignments to date.
How does Abhishek Nayar compare Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav as captains?
Former India batting coach Abhishek Nayar addressed the discussion over comparing Shreyas Iyer captaincy to that of Suryakumar Yadav, pointing out that each captain’s tenure has been unique. According to Nayar, India played a high amount of T20Is at home or in subcontinental circumstances under Suryakumar, whereas Iyer’s tenure included more away assignments, including tours to England, Zimbabwe, Japan, and now New Zealand.

Both Pujara and Nayar’s comments support the broader perspective that foreign success, particularly in a country like New Zealand, has a significant impact on a captain’s standing inside the squad and beyond.
