Tanush Kotian was named to India’s Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December 2024, when Ravichandran Ashwin retired in the middle of the series. After more than two years, the Mumbai offspinner has failed to make his Test debut. He has remained dedicated to improving his craft after seeing other spin-bowling all-rounders, such as Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain, earn Test caps earlier in 2026.
Tanush Kotian has worked closely with former India spinner Sunil Joshi at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, as well as former Mumbai and India batter Jatin Paranjape in Mumbai, to learn new techniques. He was a net bowler for India’s touring team on its most recent visit to Sri Lanka. Kotian regarded his readiness for international cricket while analysing his progress as a cricket player.
The spinner has been training using the crease and its variations to challenge hitters from different angles. He provided a detailed explanation of his technical accomplishments, claiming that he has been focusing on how to bowl from various positions in respect to the stumps and how to adapt his technique for both left-handed and right-handed batsmen. Kotian has also been learning new methods with the new ball, like as the arm ball, which he utilised for the first time at the Duleep Trophy.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, West Zone’s captain, asked Tanush Kotian to start the bowling match against North Zone in the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal. Tanush Kotian struck when the ball was 48 overs old in consecutive overs, finishing with 4 for 72 in the first innings and 4 for 46 in the second, despite his initial struggles with the new ball. He dismissed left-hander Ayush Doseja for the second time in the second innings, this time opening with the new ball.
Tanush Kotian, who made his debut in December 2018, has 146 first-class wickets at an average of 27.19. Over the last five seasons, he has played four Duleep Trophy matches and scored a century and a half-century in the Irani Cup. He was part of a high-scoring squad that won the SMAT two years ago with an economy rate of 7.44.
IPL platform and domestic focus
The spinner still has limited IPL experience. He was drafted into the Rajasthan Royals squad in 2024 to replace the injured Jos Buttler and open the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, however he has only played one IPL game. Tanush Kotian did not sell at the Saudi Arabian mega-auction for the IPL 2025.
According to Tanush Kotian, the IPL remains an important platform for getting noticed by selectors.
He acknowledged that the IPL poses a unique set of challenges in terms of performance and recognition. Despite the fact that he has not yet been selected for the Test, Kotian remains focused on his domestic performances and future chances.

The Ranji Trophy season will begin on October 11, 2026, when Mumbai hosts Chandigarh. In addition to the home Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series in early 2027, Tanush Kotian planned to travel to New Zealand, where India was scheduled to play two Tests in the second half of November 2026. He was determined to make his case for international selection throughout the domestic season.
