New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has decided not to sign a central contract for the 2026–2027 campaign in order to protect his chances of playing white-ball cricket overseas. The 35-year-old signed a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket and is expected to play in the Big Bash League.

Although his contract status has changed, Michael Bracewell continues to play a crucial role in New Zealand’s white-ball strategy. Along with Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, and Tim Seifert, he will have a modest contract with the Blackcaps.

Michael Bracewell remains committed to New Zealand.

Michael Bracewell’s decision aligns with New Zealand Cricket’s ongoing efforts to provide experienced white-ball players who want to play in foreign Twenty20 tournaments additional options. The all-rounder, who is still available for New Zealand, is expected to play in the five-match Twenty20 International series against India.

Michael Bracewell thanked New Zealand Cricket for allowing him to continue his commitment to the national team while pursuing opportunities at this stage of his career.

White-ball cricket player Michael Bracewell believes the opportunity was too excellent to pass up. He also made it clear that his commitment to the Blackcaps will not be affected by his decision to go to a casual contract.

In addition, Michael Bracewell is excited to participate in the upcoming home Twenty20 competition in New Zealand. He is expected to be available for the inaugural NZ20 competition, which is scheduled to begin next summer.

In New Zealand, Nick Kelly signs his first contract.

Because Bracewell was removed from the central contract list, Nick Kelly, a batter for the Northern Districts, received his maiden New Zealand contract.

Kelly signs his first national contract eleven years after making his first-class debut. The 33-year-old has participated in eight ODIs and seven T20Is since making his New Zealand debut in March 2025. He captained New Zealand in two Twenty20 Internationals against Bangladesh earlier this year, filling in for the injured Tom Latham.

Kelly joins the contractual group following a stellar spell at Leicestershire, where he amassed 950 runs across forms. In the One Day Cup final, he also produced his sixth List A century against Middlesex.

Rob Walter backs seasoned Nick Kelly

Kelly spent two seasons at Otago with Rob Walter, the head coach of New Zealand, who believes the batter has earned the opportunity due to his consistent domestic cricket performance.

Walter also believes that Kelly’s somewhat late entry into international cricket could be useful. The batter has spent years perfecting his skill, so he has the experience to handle pressure at the highest level.

Kelly has strengthened his case for a consistent place in New Zealand’s white-ball team with three fifties in his last four ODIs. His extensive knowledge of both domestic and international cricket has also thrilled Walter.

The Northern Districts batter has played in more than 300 professional games and is regarded as one of the best fielders in the country. Because of such qualities, Walter believes he will be a valuable member of the contractual group.
