On October 3, West Indies captain Shai Hope led his team to a five-wicket win over India in the third one-day international at the PCA International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, chasing down a total of 352 in 48.2 overs. Despite having to start the innings after Jewel Andrew injured his finger while fielding, Hope finished unbeaten on 162 from 143 deliveries, leading the winning chase. India had already won the first two games of the three-match series, thus the West Indies’ triumph was a relief.
Shai Hope has long stated that his leadership and batting styles were influenced by former India captain MS Dhoni. Drawing on this understanding, the West Indies captain used a mindset that emphasised process over outcome during the arduous pursuit against India.
Shai Hope’s innings serves as an illustration of how this approach is applied. He achieved his 21st ODI century off 104 deliveries and his half-century off 46. He then made a dramatic shift of pace, intensifying the chase in the latter stages with 62 runs off his final 39 deliveries.

Daren Sammy, the former West Indies captain, praised Shai Hope’s leadership style and his ability to lead from the front during the chase. Sammy pointed out that, while Hope’s technique differs from his own, it is still highly effective in increasing team productivity.
